I was asked at the beginning of this summer by my circle of Algonquinish MySpace friends exactly what I would be doing to pass
the long months of heat and boredom that break up my 9 month teaching gig
.
As a joke, I said, "I will paint ALL of my MySpace friends." I have 180 or so. It was, in all honesty, a joke.
I began recieving messages such as, "When will you paint me?" and the far more agonizing, "Why haven't you painted me?"
How many artistic projects have begun with "What the hell?"
I decided to give it a shot. I restricted myself to painting the images only in black and white and on
bristol board - mostly to save money. I told everyone that I would only paint an image they had posted on their MySpace page.
It is a crusade of sorts. An attempt to bring an organic visual to the realm of the purely digital. I've just touched the surface, but I hope to finish them all in a year or so. Hopefully I can convince a local gallery to show them all when they are done.
